Lady Macbeth is the focus of the exploration of gender roles in Macbeth. As Lady Macbeth propels her husband toward murdering Duncan, she indicates that she must take on masculine characteristics, “Come you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts! Unsex me here, and fillnme crown to toe top full off direst cruelty” Clearly, gender roles is out of traditional order. This disruption of gender roles is also presented through Lady Macbeth’s usurpation of the dominant role in her marriage; on many occasions she rules her husband dictates his actions. The disruption of gender roles is also perceived as violating nature and despite their designation as sisters, the gender of these characters is ambiguous. Upon encountering them, Banquo says, “you should be women and yet your beards forbid me to interprete that you are so”, their facial hair symbolizes their influence in the affairs of the male-dominated warrior society of Scotland. Gender roles have changes her time. Normally the traditional role of a woman was as a wife and mother. She was to be caring, nurturing, compassionate and supportive of he husband. For men they were the bread winners, the head, father and husband of the family. He was to protect and provide food for the family. He was to be Stoic, strong, responsible and in charge. However women have transitioned into traditionally male domians of the business and professional world and men into the women’s world. Women have generally established themselves in the business and professional world and are now asserting themselves as individuals. Some men on the other hand have moved toward traditionally take territory. They gave many challenges including judgements about their masculinity, their strengths and their general character as a man.
